Zeller Schwarze Katz, Dr. Beckermann, 2009, four bucks at Trader Joe's.<br /><br />2. Piesporter Michelsberg, Dr. Beckermann, 2009, four bucks at Trader Joe's.<br /><br />3. Riesling, Dr. Loosen, 2009, twelve bucks at, um, Wines & Whines or Whatever.<br /><br />Winner was Piesporter. Happy little wine. 2nd place Dr. Loosen. Not up to Herr Doktor's usual high standard. 3rd place a long way back was Zeller. This is probably a blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Capuccio (hence the bastardo designation, easy to figure out). The former is light, the latter dark, the blend looks nice, probably not a bad wine, certainly unusual (very dry, upstanding, a hint of spice). Then he pours it over the clams and grills them. Indoors, use one of those cast-iron Italian grill pans; outdoors, if you’re dexterous (I use a grill basket, as I’m not), grill right over the coals.<br /> You can also steam the clams with the sauce by cooking the ginger-garlic-oil mix for a few minutes in a large saucepan, then adding clams (or mussels, equally good) and a cup of white wine. As soon as they’re cooked, sprinkle with parsley and serve right up!<br /> Tightrope-taut Friuliano? You betcha. Lively and zippy too. Got to be dry and light. Aussie Riesling’s another good choice.
